Electronic Telegram No. 3430 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2013ah IN UGC 5201 = PSN J09443380+5545444 Li Zhou, Xiaofeng Wang, and Juncheng Chen, Tsinghua University (THU); Tianmeng Zhang and Xu Zhou, National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 18.6) on unfiltered CCD images taken on Feb. 22.60 UT using the 0.6-m NAOC Schmidt telescope in the course of the THU-NAOC Transient Survey (TNTS). The new object is located at R.A. = 9h44m33s.80, Decl. = +55d45'44".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 18".0 west and 1".6 south of the center of the galaxy UGC 5201. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images obtained on Feb. 19 (limiting mag about 20.0) or on a Digitized Sky Survey image from the Palomar Sky Survey. The TNTS images are posted at the following website URL: http://www.thca.tsinghua.edu.cn/~wangxf/TNTS/PSNJ09443380+5545444.png. The variable was designated PSN J09443380+5545444 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2013ah based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below. L. Elenin (Lyubertsy, Russia) and I. Molotov (Moscow, Russia) measured magnitude 18.4 and position end figures 33s.98 +/- 0".06, 43".8 +/- 0".1 for 2013ah using UCAC-4 reference stars, from co-added unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag about 19.6) taken remotely with a 0.45-m f/2.8 telescope at the ISON-NM Observatory near Mayhill, NM, USA, on Feb. 23.410; they have posted an image at the following website URL: http://spaceobs.org/images/TOCP/PSNJ09443380+5545444-20130223.png. Jinghua Gao and Xiaofeng Wang, Tsinghua University (THU); and Tianmeng Zhang, National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), report on an optical spectrogram (range 350-880 nm) of PSN J09443380+5545444 = SN 2013ah that was obtained on Mar. 1.66 UT with the 2.16-m telescope (+ BFOSC) at the Xinglong Station of the NAOC. The spectrum is consistent with a type-Ia supernova a few days before maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2013ah matches with SN 2000dn at -8 days. Adopting a redshift of 0.0254 for the presumed host galaxy, UGC 5201 (Springob et al. 2005, Ap.J. Suppl. 160, 149), they measure the velocity of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature to be about 11200 km/s.
