Electronic Telegram No. 3364 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2012ig IN UGC 11706 = PSN J21142287+1514407 Zhijian Xu, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China; and Xing Gao, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, report the discovery of a possible supernova (mag approximately 16.6) on an unfiltered 40-s survey CCD image (limiting mag about 18.5) taken at Mt. Nanshan by Xing Gao in the course of the Xingming Observation Sky Survey around Dec. 21.535 UT using a Celestron C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The new object is approximately located at R.A. = 21h14m22s.87, Decl. = +15d14'40".7 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 5".8 east and 2" north of the center of UGC 11706 (= PGC 66396). Nothing is visible at this position on a Digitized Sky Survey image from 1991 Aug. 14 (limiting mag about 19.9; no bandpass or plate type specified). The discoverers have posted images at website URL http://www.xjltp.com/XOSS/XM56ZX/XM56ZX.htm. The variable was designated PSN J21142287+1514407 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012ig based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below. Additional unfiltered CCD images for 2012ig: Dec. 9, [18.7 (Xu and Gao); 10, [19.0 (Xu and Gao); 22.042, 16.2 (R. A. Koff, Bennett, CO, USA; Meade 0.25-m f/10 reflector; limiting mag 19.4; position end figures 22s.83, 40".1; UCAC3 reference stars; image posted at website URL http://antelopehillsobservatory.org/SNpictures/PSNJ21142287+1514407final.jpg). P. Ochner, L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, A. Pastorello, and M. Turatto, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that optical spectroscopy (range 340-800 nm; resolution 0.7 nm), obtained on Dec. 28.69 UT with the Asiago 1.22-m Galileo Telescope (+ Boller & Chivens spectrograph), shows that PSN J21142287+1514407 = SN 2012ig is a type-Ia supernova. Adopting for the host galaxy (UGC 11706) the redshift z = 0.015798 (Bottinelli et al. 1993, A.Ap. Suppl. 102, 57; via NED), the best fit is obtained with various type-Ia supernovae around maximum light. The expansion velocity, as deduced from the position of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption, is about 10300 km/s. The Asiago classification spectra are posted at website URL http://graspa.oapd.inaf.it; classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
