Christensen, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, report the discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images: SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2012fl Oct. 13.36 2 56 04.38 + 0 56 01.0 19.2 1".2 E, 0".3 N Nothing was visible at this postion on a CSS image from Feb. 12.15 UT (limiting mag 20.2). L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, A. Pastorello, and M. Turatto, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that a spectrogram of 2012fl, obtained on Oct. 22.97 UT with the Asiago 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC range 350-820 nm, resolution 1.3 nm), suggests that this is a normal type-Ia supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra via the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2012fl is similar to several normal type-Ia supernovae a few days after maximum at a redshift of about 0.086. The expansion velocity deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption is then 10600 km/s.
