Grennan, Raheny Observatory, Dublin, Ireland reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 16.2) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.8) taken on Aug. 22.009 UT using a 0.35-m f/4.9 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ SBIG ST8-XME CCD camera) in the course of his supernova patrol. The new object appears at R.A. = 6h26m51s.01, Decl. = +59d05'02'.6 (equinox 2000.0), which is 32".3 west and 21".6 north of the core of the galaxy IC 2166. The variable was designated PSN J06265101+5905026 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is designated SN 2012ej here based on the spectroscopic report published below. Additional CCD magnitudes (unfiltered unless noted otherwise) for 2012ej: Mar. 30, [17.9 (D. Denisenko and V. Lipunov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute; and V. Yurkov and E. Sinyakov, Blagoveschensk Educational State University; 0.40-m f/2.5 MASTER-Amur robotic reflector + 16-megapixel camera); Aug. 19.775, 15.8 (Denisenko et al.; pre-discovery image; position end figures 51s.06, 02".6; comparison of the Mar. 30 and Aug. 19 images is posted at the following website URL http://master.sai.msu.ru/static/OT/PSNJ06265101+5905026-MASTER.jpg); Aug. 22.120, 16.4 (T. Boles, Coddenham, England; position end figures 50s.99, 02".1); Aug. 24.448, 15.3 (L. Elenin, Lyubertsy, Russia; and I. Molotov, Moscow, Russia; remotely taken at the ISON-NM Observatory near Mayhill, NM, USA, with a 0.45-m f/2.8 telescope; position end figures 50s.98 +/- 0".1, 02".6 +/- 0".1; NOMAD reference stars; limiting mag about 20.3; image posted at URL http://spaceobs.org/images/TOCP/PSNJ06265101+5905026-20120824.png); Aug. 24.457, 15.6 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; remotely using a 51-cm RCOS telescope + STL11K camera + luminance filter at the New Mexico Skies Observatory near Mayhill; position end figures 51s.01, 02".7; image posted at the following website URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/7852074882/); Aug. 26.030, 15.9 (Grennan; position end figures 50s.97, 02".7). J. Fynbo, Copenhagen University, and his students A. Bo Nielsen, M. Theiss Kristensen, T. Ehlert Brinckmann, M. Ortving Lindholmer, and J.-K. Krogager; J. Sollerman, Stockholm University; and M. Stritzinger, Aarhus University; report that they obtained a visual-wavelength spectrogram of PSN J06265101+5905026 = SN 2012ej with the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC; range 350-900 nm, resolution 0.8 nm) on Aug. 23.15 UT. The fully reduced spectrum indicates that 2012ej is a type-Ic supernova. Adopting a redshift of z = 0.0089 (Springob et al. 2005, Ap.J. Suppl. 160, 149; via NED), the best match from cross-correlation of the spectrum with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) is with the type-Ic supernova 2004aw (Taubenberger et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1459) somewhat past maximum light.
