Electronic Telegram No. 3015 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images: SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2012aa Jan. 29.56 14 52 33.48 - 3 31 54.0 17.7 0".1 E, 1".6 S The variable was designated PSN J14523348-0331540 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012aa based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below. Additional CCD magnitudes for 2012aa: 2011 May 12.40 UT, [19.1 (KAIT); 2012 Jan. 31.51, 17.9 (KAIT); Feb. 1.445, 17.7 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; remotely using a 51-cm RCOS telescope + STL11K camera + luminance filter at the New Mexico Skies Observatory near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.; magnitude includes host-galaxy light; position end figures 33s.56, 54".6; image posted at the following website URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/6803721927/). J. M. Silverman, K. I. Clubb, P. Blanchard, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a low-signal- to-noise-ratio CCD spectrum (range 340-1000 nm), obtained on Feb. 2 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that PSN J14523348-0331540 = SN 2012aa is a supernova, probably of type Ic. The redshift of the host galaxy is found to be about 23900 km/s from narrow emission features.
