Electronic Telegram No. 4208 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Mailing address: Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2015az IN IC 290 = PSN J03094251+4058293 R. Gagliano, R. Post, J. Newton, and T. Puckett report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 17.6) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.0) taken with a 0.60-m reflector near Meadow Lakes, CA, U.S.A., on Nov. 30.360 UT in the course of the Puckett Observatory Supernova Search. The new object is located at R.A. = 3h09m42s.51, Decl. = +40o58'29".3 (equinox J2000.0), which is 1".4 west and 0".7 north of the center of IC 290. A finding image was posted at website URL http://possdata.com/PSNJ03094251+4058293.jpg. The variable was designated PSN J03094251+4058293 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2015az based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below. L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, N. Elias-Rosa, P. Ochner, A. Pastorello, L. Tartaglia, G. Terreran, and M. Turatto, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that an optical spectrogram (range 340-820 nm; resolution 1.4 nm) of PSN J03094251+4058293 = SN 2015az, obtained on Nov. 30.99 UT with the Asiago 182-cm Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC) in the framework of the Asiago Transient Classification Program (Tomasella et al. 2014, A.N. 335, 841), shows that 2015az is a type-Ia supernova, about one week before maximum light. The expansion velocity, as deduced from the position of the minimum of the Si II 635-nm line, is about 13600 km/s. The redshift adopted for the galaxy IC 290 = UGC 2561 (z = 0.02) is from Huchra et al. (1999, Ap.J. Suppl. 121, 287). Classifications were done with GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024). The Asiago classification spectra are posted at website URL http://sngroup.oapd.inaf.it.
