Electronic Telegram No. 3392 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2013L IN ESO 216-39 = PSN J11452955-5035531 L. A. G. Monard, Calitzdorp, Western Cape, South Africa, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 15.6) on several unfiltered CCD images taken on Jan. 22.025 and 23.031 UT with a 30-cm RCX400 telescope at his Klein Karoo Observatory. The new object is located at R.A. = 11h45m29s.55, Decl. = -50d35'53".1 (equinox 2000.0; UCAC4 reference stars), which is 20" east and 24" south of the galaxy core of the Sb-type galaxy ESO 216-39. Nothing is seen at this position on his previous image of this galaxy taken on Jan. 3.068 (limiting mag 19) or on earlier images. The variable was designated PSN J11452955-5035531 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2013L based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below. A. Morales Garoffolo and N. Elias-Rosa, Institut de Ciencies de l'Espai, IEEC, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Barcelona; S. Benitez-Herrera and S. Taubenberger, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astrophysik, Garching; E. S. Walker, Yale University; S. Benetti and A. Pastorello, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova Astronomical Observatory; S. Valenti, University of California at Santa Barbara and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope; S. J. Smartt, K. Smith, and D. Young, Queen's University, Belfast; M. Sullivan, University of Southampton; and A. Gal-Yam and O. Yaron, Weizmann Institute for Science, on behalf of the PESSTO collaboration (see Valenti et al., as posted at URL http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=4037), report that optical spectroscopy (range 360-910 nm), obtained on Jan. 28.27 UT with the New Technology Telescope (+ EFOSC2), shows that PSN J11452955-5035531 = SN 2013L is a young type-IIn supernova at redshift z = 0.017. Narrow, unresolved Balmer emission lines are superimposed on a blue continuum. PESSTO classification spectra can be obtained at website URL http://www.pessto.org/; classification is made via SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) and GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383).
