Electronic Telegram No. 3296 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. A. Mahabal, A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; and S. M. Larson and E. Christensen, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, report the discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images: SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2012gg Oct. 27.38 4 36 11.05 - 5 04 53.1 17.7 1" S Further CSS magnitudes for 2012gg: Oct. 11.40 UT, 17.7; 17.44, 17.6. Photometric magnitudes obtained with the Palomar 1.5-m telescope (+ Gunn filters): Nov. 2.24, r = 17.6; i = 17.7; z = 17.4. L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, A. Pastorello, M. Turatto, and M. Fiaschi, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that optical spectroscopy (range 340-820 nm; resolution 1.3 nm) obtained on Nov. 6.07 UT with the Asiago 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC; range 350-820 nm; resolution 1.3 nm), shows that 2012gg is a type-II supernova about one month after explosion at redshift, z, about 0.03. For the estimated epoch, a high ejecta-expansion velocity of about 9500 km/s is derived from the minimum of the broad, P-Cyg-profile H-alpha line. The Asiago classification spectra are posted at the following website URL: http://graspa.oapd.inaf.it. Classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
