Electronic Telegram No. 3172 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Fraser, R. Kotak, D. Wright, K. Smith, S. J. Smartt, L. Magill, and M. McCrum, Queens University, Belfast, report that an optical spectrogram of PSN J19120821-3207370 = SN 2012dl (cf. CBET 3170) was obtained by J. Jensen-Hansen with the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC + Grism#4; coverage 320-910 nm; resolution about 1.4 nm) on July 7. Using the GELATO code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383), the spectrum of 2012?? appears to match a range of type-Ia supernovae between 30 and 40 days from maximum light at the redshift of ESO 459-6. The absolute magnitude of the supernova at the discovery epoch (R = -16.1) reported by J. Brimacombe suggests that 2012?? was either discovered before maximum light or that the supernova is reddened. Unfortunately, the signal-to-noise of the spectrum is too low to identify any Na D absorption.
